"Heh. Clarity," North nodded. "We'll see how well she manages to get herself tied up in all of this. Never seen her stick her neck out so much for anything other than these Eosa." He scratched his head idly. "Well, anyway...thank you for your time. I'll call another investigation, now that we know where to look. And I'll, ah, keep you updated."

---Some time after the meeting between North and the Cascadian intel officers---

The head Cascadian covert operative would receive a call from General North. North had just gotten off the phone with a rather frantic Kenji Wright, and neither of them were too happy about Cascadia's recent media statement. North waited impatiently for him to answer his call.

"It sure is," North responded. "What the hell happened there, exactly? Your government sure likes to get uber-diplomatic first and then ask questions later. I'm catching flak from people...but we're trying to buy more time."

The media release about what was happening didnt explain enough, anyone on the outside hearing it heard one phrase, "pushed by the Senate for retrial" I would suggest having your current PR person riped a new one, in situations like this they need to LEAD the public opinion not give them vague information that they need to think about themselves. Rule of them, the public is stupid and more often then not jumps on bandwagons. If you dont create your own bandwagons the public will come up with the most ridiculous notions that can undermine you

"This isn't about our PR or the public, this was your damn government being too quick to act. Why would you let your "bandwagon" steer the actions of a government instead of taking the time to find out the damn facts? If your government only does what the public wants when it jumps to a conclusion, then it's not any smarter than the public." North sighed heavily. "This is gonna make it all the harder to get any more information. If we're going to make this work, I need you to get your higher-ups on board with it."

Not sure exactly what you mean. I dont have governmental authority I am a Covert operative. And what does the public opinion and activity thats in the open in regards to this? You have Jeck, have you pressed him personaly for information. With as high profile as this case would be it seems easy to have a body stand in make his appearances in court. stick an armored helmet and bullet proof vest on an actor and let the trial go while your military inteligence guys drill him for information give him ultimatums and what ever you do with interogations, if you want deniability give him to us and we'll do the dirty work. We can even stage it to look like we kidnapped him from your custody. You want the info just as badly as we do, theres no reason that we need to pussy foot around the professor, there will always be collateral damage

"Goddamnit, of course I know that you're not a government official. I'm generalizing." North paused and listened intently to what he had to say. "You know, I think you're right. I'm not so sure about pulling him completely from the trial and staging an actor, but...there's nothing that says the poor bastard has to have the privilege of sleeping at night between trials, or anything luxurious like that. You know, I can't really get my hands as dirty as I'd like with interrogations. So if you want in on it, I'll give you the clear. I can't risk 'staging' anything right now, but we'll plaster a confidential sticker on it and keep everybody's noses clean until we're finished with what needs to be done. I'll call you." With that, there was a click and North ended the call.

The next evening, after Jeck's long and arduous day of televised trials had ended, North sent another call through to the operative. "Might wanna stop by. We've got someone you might wanna say hi to."

The two Cascadian ops would be double-checked upon entry for any surveillance equipment, weapons, et cetera, just as a security precaution. They were "signed in" with a liability waiver and a nondisclosure agreement to protect from media coverage.

North met them inside. "Right this way, gentlemen," North grinned as he led them down a long series of high-security corridors that he personally had to open with his military ID, fingerprints, eye-scans, and pass-codes. They were also escorted by elite ADR bodyguards for North and a few high-ranking soldiers and investigators. He eventually took them to a large elevator that that seemed to go several stories underground into a subterranean extension of the military base that was very high security clearance. After they made it here, they went through another series of security check-points and finally to a small, unassuming room with a vault-like door that was guarded by ADR heavy soldiers. This was the interrogation room, hidden deep in the bowels of the Rescentan military base.

"We brought a fruit basket to greet our guest of honor," North joked to one of the guards at the door. Another ID verification, and the heavy vault door was opened inside to an interrogation chamber. There was a room full of monitoring equipment and investigative technology in front of a one-way glass window which looked inside to another room where Professor Jeck Hawkins himself sat, handcuffed and shackled to a mounted chair. The monitoring room had a few tech people nearby handling the surveillance equipment. One of them looked up and said "General North, sir, he's all yours. Everything is prepared. The detectives have made the first pass over him but he's only giving the same typical answers."

"Good," North nodded, "he'll be more fun to crack." He looked up at the Cascadians. "You ready for this?"

Very ready. Cascadian field intel work takes a ....different type of person then your average stereotypical cascadian, some times to do the right thing we need to get our hands dirty. After you general, this is after all your house.

"Very good. Interrogator number one has already -politely- worked him over for answers, but he's crafty. Hasn't skipped a beat from his story yet. Let's go see what we can convince him of."

North gave the signal to one of the surveillance techs to open the door. He slowly entered first, allowing the Cascadians to follow him, and the door shut behind them. The room was slightly dark, with a single bright light behind the interrogators' chairs that was shining down at Hawkins. The old professor sat uncomfortably on a polished metal chair, his arms and legs bound closely to it. His hair was disheveled and it looked as if he hadn't been allowed the privileges of shaving or cleaning himself up in weeks, but nonetheless his expression seemed calm and composed.

"Good morning, Jeck," North said sharply. Ironically, it was evening. "I trust you know who I am."

"General Markus North." The weary professor spoke without hesitation. "I had suspected they would start the intimidation tactics soon."

"Now, what makes you think that..." North pulled up a chair across from Jeck at the long table and rather comfortably took a seat.

"Because you won't be satisfied until you think you've psychologically battered me enough to contrive some false confessions, so you can be done with this charade."

"Let's start from the beginning, shall we?"

"Gladly," North nodded. "This is Mr. Smith, and this is Mr. Johns." He gestured to the operatives in turn. "Gentlemen, this is Dr. Jeck Hawkins, professor emeritus of the UOR and fabled geneticist and chairman of the ADRA's Genetics Committee."

"I'm sure we'll get along fine, of course, because I have no choice but to get along with you throughout the next several hours of this interrogation. I've told you people all that I can tell you, I don't understand why you've decided to bring in more investigators when there's nothing else to know."

Jeck studied Mr. Johns for a moment, not quite used to the searing sensation of soul-ripping blue eyes, and then looked away.

Mr Smith smiles:: Yes Mr Hawkins, you've told them everything that you believe you CAN, that statement implies that everything else you have to tell are things you believe you can't tell us for what ever reason. Do trust me Mr Hawkins, soon enough you will decide that you can tell us everything about everyone your involved with in this. Have you ever gone fishing Mr Hawkins? What do you do when you catch a little fish? You take what you learned from the catch and then throw him back in because you want a bigger fish, you want THE BIG FISH. Now what if your in a bad mood, well you dont throw the little fish back, you keep it, you shove a barbed hook into it and use it as bait. You know the little fish will probly die in the process, but you really dont care all you want is the big fish. So you see Mr Hawkins... your the little fish, we could make all of this dissapear and go so much better for you your being tried as the big fish, and its not very public yet but the other colonies dont really care what the trial says, they want to see justice done, but if it came out that your just a small fish, you'd likely get a slap on the wrist and witness protection. But we could always leek to information that Jeck is getting close to breaking, make some changes to your transportation and leak that, use you as bait for the big fish, and a good fisherman knows not to worry about the bait, you wait till the big one has bit down hard then u set the hook. So Mr Jeck, how would you like to do some fishing? :: Mr Smiths stare was just as hard as MR Johns as he spoke::

Jeck scoffed in an attempt to conceal his discomfort with the new interrogator. "You don't intimidate me. I don't even know what you're talking about..." He paused for a few brief seconds. He was trying not to budge. "I can't help you any more than I already have. I've told you people hundreds of times over."

"I'm not here to amuse you," Hawkins said. "I am the victim here. I was stalked, harrassed, threatened with my life and the lives of my family...what interrogations are the lot of you doing on the real perpetrators here? The Eosa who were responsible for this?"

You see thats the thing. No weapons, no seeming hostile intent aside from having themselves being heard. And then theres you seemingly caught up in it. The Genetics committee chairman and you seem to have a fairly indepth relationship over some project that, you shouldn't be talking about in data-mail and that needs some type of cover "just in case" I'd also be interested in hearing about your interest in paleobiology of primitive rezzian homonids. And why this is the first anyones hearing about these threats on your family.

Seemingly a little bit confused and disoriented, probably by the sheer amount of time and the lies he's been led to believe during interrogation, Hawkins took some extra time to formulate his next response.

"You're trying to incriminate me for something I had no choice in so that it makes your Eosa look better," he growled. "Those things are unfit to mingle in with society. It's dangerous. They are dangerous. You don't know what you're playing with. You'll regret this."

Sounds like you know somthing more? Why dont you explain to us why exactly you feel their unfit to mingle with society when they are civilized enough to try and seek their own freedom. Do not forget, I am cascadian. We dont believe in Lying to interogate so if i say somthing it is true. Do not think we wont use you as bait for your co-conspirators. Be honest to us and we can protect you and be sure no one threatens your family. Now Mr hawkins , why dont you tell me a more detailed story

"Their genetics, their chemical makeup, their very DNA. It's a ticking time-bomb." He leaned in a little closer, almost losing his composure. "Those things are animals. Animals. They're wild, somewhere deep down inside. They are not civilized, they are engineered. They might look like they're trying to seek their own freedom, but...a decade from now, if you let this happen, they'll have not only contaminated humankind with their unstable genetic infrastructures, which will make the rates of developmental disabilities in future generations skyrocket greater than 300%, but they will dominate every aspect of your society that you allow them to. You don't understand. Their genes are spliced from animals, from primates on Reza that would just as soon rip you to pieces. They're someone's fucked-up science project, and they got an F. You don't know how these things were made, do you? None of you know?"
