PostSubject: [Media] Aftermath of UOR Shooting on Novalyse   Mon Jan 27, 2014 2:51 pm

Breaking News streamed from Novalyse as controversial reporter Jessica Ryant appeared on the datanet.  Behind Ryant viewers could see rioting and protesting civilians in the streets with signs stating "Bring Down the ADR" and other such slanders against the ADR and Rescenta.

"This is Jessica Ryant reporting from Novalyse Capital of Skyre where civilians are in an uproar against the ADR for the possible assassination attempt on the life of Alexander Chase," she said as the camera switched to the one attached to her helmet, facing the capital building which had hundreds of civilians being held back by guards with Pulse batons and semi-auto rifles.  "As you can see, lethally armed guards have now been stationed outside the capital building to ensure General St. John as well as other government officials from this chaotic mob.  Wait...reports from inside the space docks are saying that Echo Company, the company which Overseer Chase once belonged to, has breached the security and are launching for the ADR!  I'm transferring the footage now."

The camera shifted to the security of the space docks where a group of armed soldiers number near fifty subdued the guards at the docks and filed into a unknown model battle ship.  The engines began started and the ship was about to launch when five fully armed squads of guards entered the ship and engaged the company.  The footage ended there and switched back to looking at Ryant.

"The company has been detained and are being moved to a secure holding facility, supposedly fifteen guards were injured in the scrap between Echo on the ship.  It seems that Echo was not satisfied with St. John's address and planned to retrieve Overseer Chase themselves."  the sound of a gunshot echoed from behind the camera, screaming came after.

"Evacuate the Capital Building Courtyard before lethal action must be taken."  A voice resounded as Ryant switched the camera to see the building.  A security guard approached Ryant and covered the camera and dragged her away from the building.  The transmission was cut off for a brief period there.

"Breaking News!!  Representative Serah Lawson's sister, Ashe has broken into the General's office and is demanding immediate retrieval of her sister and Overseer Chase.  I'm receiving footage from the lobby cameras now."  The video opened, showing Ashe in full military armor as she made her demands.  St. John stepped out the door of his office and stood for a moment listening, although there was no sound on the footage shown, until Lawson drew her pistol and shot above St. John.  He swiftly stepped forward and punched her in the chest, caving her chest plate and making her drop the gun.  She was then apprehended by guards and taken out of the lobby.  Immediately the stream was cut off, and static showed in its place.  No further transmissions from Ryant were seen.

Clarity Davis was monitoring the situation closely. She hit on the news streams from Novalyse, expecting there to be riots and civil unrest - but the situation seemed severe. She knew that, regardless of Chase's statement and Wright's attempts to smooth things over, relations between the ADR and Novalyse had just taken a big hit. She shuddered when she saw the protestors' signs - "Bring Down the ADR" - and called an emergency confidential Senate meeting in Rescenta's capitol building.

"Obviously, we're doing what we can on the diplomatic front," Davis stated.

Head of Senate Wright nodded emphatically. "But we're not sure that it's enough."

"Exactly," Clarity continued, "so we need to forward a motion to the Demarchy to advance our defenses. Commandant, do you agree?"

A burly, armored man sitting across the table shook his head. "Don't fool yourself. Everyone knows we couldn't take Novalyse. We don't have the numbers, and we don't have the firepower. We're outmatched. Even with allies."

Wright sighed, exhausted from his long hours of balancing diplomacy and threats of warfare. "What do you propose we do then, Commandant?"

"Honestly? I think they're bluffing. We've got their guy. They can't pull off a ground assault on Rescenta - what are they gonna do, knock on the front gates for us to open them or try and blast through the dome and kill everything inside including Chase? And they can't bomb us - same problem. They'd be as stuck as we are."

"They can bomb our other cities. They could annhilate Reza. An eye for an eye. Listen - they threatened seven days. Doesn't that at least give us a chance to -" Davis got cut off.

"- to throw together a bunch of ragtag mercenaries and greenhorn recruits just in case they do decide to make us their punching bag? Sure. Go ahead and put 'em up against Novalysians. Novalysians. We've got nothing, Davis. I've already got all hands on deck. If the Demarchy would've passed my motion to boost military funding and recruitment rates last term, we might have somethin' to talk about. But you want to know what will happen if they decide to attack? We'll hold 'em off for a few hours, maybe a couple days if you're really lucky, and then we're going to run out of anti-craft phase missiles, we're going to run out of SAM's, we're going to run out of defense fleets, we're going to run out of bullets, and we're going to run out of good, honest humans to fight their goddamn cyborgs."

"They're not exactly cyborgs - "

"I don't give a damn, Davis." The Commandant stood up. "You want my advice? Launch that wiley bastard Chase right at 'em, and if he gets there alive, great. If he dies on the way, then you'll be evacuating with the rest of us. That's my motion. Forward that to your Demarchy."

Conners was sitting in his office drinking some very expensive champagne from Deysha when he saw the Novalyse stream and took a spit take. He quickly slammed the intercom button and yelled "holy shit william get in here!"

William walked in and said "Yes Richard i saw it too."

"What the sweet fuck, if this keeps going public opinion will MAKE them go to war, we can talk big all we want but we cant fight a fucking war with Novalyse!"

William sighed "I know sir, at this point we have two options, stay out of it and risk a hit to our relationship with A.D.R, or bluff and risk a hit to our relationship with Novalyse…and a war that we would probably not win."

Richard sighed and rested his forehead onto one of his hands and he shook his head "What side are those Cascadians on?"

William shrugged "I'm assuming A.D.R, tiny little helpless scientist colony versus big old military state? With their moral high ground i wouldn't be surprised if they weren't already preparing a fleet to move out."

Richard nodded "We're going to wait, if anything else happens, if any more escalation occurs…we need to side with Cascadia and A.D.R. Atleast with Cascadia involved it would be a war not a massacre."

:: At seeing this stream the CSCC commanding officer Marshal Tyrus sighed and dialed up the CSC fleet dock commander:: I'm putting us back on full red alert...yes I know head council Cyralis stood us down, but I'm willing to bet with him answering questions right now he hasn't seen the news feed from Novalyse. Ready the entire fleet I'll be sending word to the ADR informing them that we will be sending a Vulcan flagship ahead to signify our support.... No dock command the ADR would be practically defenseless against a Novalysian assualt, we've no choice but to step in at the very least give the Novalysians pause.

::message sent to Kenji Wright of ADR:: Mr. Wright, i am aware that Head council Cyralis is in questioning and likely has not seen the latest news from Novalyse, due to this I Marshal Tyrus of Cascadia Space Corp Command have rescinded his order to stand down from red alert. I have a defensive fleet ready to enter phase space and jump to ADR space at your request. I've also taken the liberty to have a Vulcan Flagship make all haste to Rescenta. You will not stand alone--

Head of Senate Wright responded quickly. "Mr. Tyrus, it is with great appreciation that we received your message of support. Security is our greatest concern right now, and we are currently in negotiations with the colony of Novalyse to try and avoid any military conflict at all cost. It is my understanding that the Military General Cole St. John of Novalyse has officially declared that Novalyse will stand down from their threats. At this time, although we are still on high alert, we have no reason to believe that the Novalysians still intend to launch an organized assault. I would like to ask that you keep your defensive fleet ready, but do not deploy them to ADR territory unless there is a certain threat of attack. We will gratefully and humbly accept the presence of your flagship that has already been launched. The Senate and the Demarchy have discussed this matter and, although we thoroughly appreciate your efforts and your support, we do not want to give Novalyse reason to believe that we are staging any kind of military counter in retaliation to their previous statements."

Mr Wright, I fully understand your concerns, and am hoping the General St john contacts me aswell, seeing as a Vulcan passing through the phase lanes should be easily noticeable. My largest concern though is that seeing how their people were up in arms at them even waiting to attack caused riots and an attempted assault, I am nervous about what them standing down fully will cause. It is my hope that seeing a Cascadian flag ship will send a clear message to any troops that decide to disobey their orders and stay put

St. John lowered his head as reports streamed through the datanet showcasing Cascadian support for the ADR.  'Damn,' he though as he slammed his palms down on the databook on the desk, shattering the screen, 'just what i needed, a Cascadian to rile everything up even more.'  He looked over at the phone on his desk and contemplated what his next course of action would be.  His hand reached out and slid the phone over, dialing innately a number he knew by heart.

"You need to move to the space docks immediately, if someone will be able to put down another uprising from Echo you're the only one I've got.  And do me a favor, next time Chase decides to be a hero just fucking shoot me."  he said as he pressed the button on the phone's dock to end the calling.  He ran his hands over his scalp, listening to the shouting from outside the capital building, before dialing the CSCC.  "This is St. John calling for whoever the hell sent the goddamn Vulcan to Rescenta."

I've been waiting for you to call,St John this is Marshal Tyrus. I have an idea that might help you silence at least the most active of your problems there. You've had at-least 1 unit try to disobey your direct orders and leave for Rescenta. I propose you use our Vulcan to your advantage. Make a public announcement that anyone taking it upon themselves to break the chain of command and actually makes it out of Novalysian space alive will be branded traitors and will receive no support once they enter Rescenta space? I understand that being in your position must be incredibly stressful, I figure we can help each other with this headache.

St. John pushed his fingers from his brow back to his temples as he listened rather frustrated with the turn of affairs. He responded after a moment that he took to compose himself, it was obvious that he was not used to dealing with international relations.

"The unit that perpetrated the station has been detained in the highest security cell we have available. Echo Company isn't exactly known for taking orders when one of its own is at stake but I assure the situation has been handled and everyone involved in the unauthorized launch attempt will he handled according to the severity of their actions.....God damn you Chase," he muttered at the end. "Echo Company should no longer pose a threat to the ADR, everything in that regard is under control. The citizens however, aren't as simple. Sending a Vulcan to Rescenta was probably the worst move you've made for your PR, and mine as well."

I'm not concerned with PR yours or mine, and Mr St John, you did threaten war on a woefully underdefended planet that is dealing with the start of what could be a civil war, without even an inkling of real information about what had happened, as a General you should well know what media does with stories like that. Why on earth would threaten war , and why the blazes didn't your intelligence community catch and censor that data net broadcast until you knew what happened?

St. John took a deep breath before answering, trying keep his obscenities to a record low.

"Its not the PR I'm concerned with, its that now I will be receiving petitions to send a entire damn fleet to you door.  I have no need to answer to you nor your government in this matter, as a matter of fact, I have more reason to oblige those petitions from what I've read from the ADR's official report.  It seem that it was your man that engaged the assailants in combat, leading the the injuries Chase sustained.  I have since assigned several people to intercept data streams from our once purely uncensored data net so the public hasn't exactly gotten that memo.  I am a general, not a politician, so don't assume that I had any other means to quell the surging anger of this colony but by the action I took.  If you'd like we can continue trying to work to a common goal however, if continuing to criticize my actions is all you wanted then you can hold on line 1."

:: LAUGHS GRUFFLY:: By god we need to knock a few back once this is over with. I've been threatened with death torture and with my children's lives but never with being put on hold. :: chuckled abit as he came back to his calm demeanor:: As for Head Council Ashara Cyralis it seems that he is to me what Mr chase is to you at the moment a giant pain in the ass. I suspect that he saw Chase go to the front and didnt want to be left out of the Heroics....and since it was a diplomatic meeting he disarmed his armor so no way to incapacitate the eosa without hand to hand....which he should have been able to better handle. but yes by all means lets work together

St. John laughed very briefly before continuing.

"Damn I could use a drink right now, I'll have to take you up on that offer once things settle down. Back to business, I will agree to your proposal under the condition that any and all nonlethal force it exerted before harming my people. They do have a pretty damn good reason to want to shoot the ADR and if I didn't have to worry about starting a war with the whole damn galaxy I would be right there with them," he said as he set his arms down firmly on the table, the sounds of civilians still echoing behind him. "As for the civilian situation, Chase's address has only brought an eye to the storm. They are still convinced the ADR planned the shooting somehow, and considering not only that your man engaged the assailants but their professor was the one to disable the security systems, I haven't released ADR's full report. With a leak in the media somewhere however, keeping this under the covers until it blows over is less than likely."

In Ashara's defense he did do the same thing that Mr chase did, and tried helping the situation, from what i've heard from ashara and from the camera's it likely would have gotten much worse if chase had swapped himself for the hostages. I doubt the ADR guards would just let them go with a foreign dignitary as a hostage. Did it turn out perfect no, but its unquestionable that lives where saved due to both Chase and Ashara's actions

St. John sighed.

"I am not blaming Ashara as I understand how moral people like that are but I can't say the same for the public, which is my concern for the time being. With whoever leaked Ryant's broadcast after Martial Law was put into effect specifically to censor and withhold our situation from the international media still unaccounted for, who knows how long until they find out an ADR professor was the instigator, and your Cyralis engaged in physical combat. Once that happens I'm afraid that lethal force will be the only way to suppress their anger..."

You do seem to be in one helluva situation. I didn't think the stereotype of Novalysians being so quick THAT level of anger was truthful. What do you suggest, St John. there must be away to quell your people without lethal force

"Are all Cascadians naive enough to generalize an entire colony's demeanor and outlook based solely on their response to the aftermath of a deadly shooting in which one of their officials was seriously wounded? I'm not going to listen to a prejudice foreigner force his goddamn way into a situation where he doesn't belong,"

St. John abruptly slammed the phone down and ended the call. Running his hands over his scalp, as he looked down at the cracked screen of the databook before him.  He tapped his fingers on the desk until he stood and streamed another intergalactic address.

"In response to the arrival of the Vulcan Flagship from Cascadia, a flagship is being prepared for Rescenta at once to ensure the safety of any and all citizens of the colony Novalyse.  Any hostile approach on this ambassador vessel will be considered an attack against the colony and we will retaliate. Keep that in mind."

"Sonuvabitch," Wright snapped as he heard St. John's next move. That was the last thing that he wanted to hear. He sent a frantic message to Davis. "Sweet shit, Clarity. We're about to have a war right here in our back yard. Cascadia and Novalyse are going to start going at it. Our own people are going to either start panicking or demand that we stand up against Novalyse...and I don't know which is worse. Fix it!"

After some intense deliberation, the following stream from Clarity Davis was the result: "As Senate Representative of the Allied Demarchy of Reza, I would like to ask that all foreign flagships please remain off of the immediate vicinity of ADR territory. We do not wish for there to be any hostility between the ADR or any other colonies, and we believe that allowing any flagships into the airspace around Rescenta would be unnecessary because - we assure you - all foreign dignitaries that are currently within the boundaries of the ADR are as safe as possible. We will immediately prepare a docking port off of ADR Station RX-2391, which is the nearest station to Rescenta that is capable of receiving two large ships. And to the colony of Novalyse - we are also preparing a live data feed of Legislative Overseer Chase's condition to you, to help assure you the highest quality of Mr. Chase's care. I repeat to the colonies of Novalyse and Cascadia, you will be welcome to ensure the safety of all members of your colonies from Docking Station RX-2391 near Rescenta. Thank you."

A transmission was sent directly to ADR immediately in response.

"This is Sergeant Jacob Markson aboard the Flagship Lykaon, I am under strict orders from General St. John to heed ADR's command only in exception if a threat is made clear toward the flagship or any other Novalysian citizens.  All preparations have been made and we are ready to launch for Docking Station RX-2391.  St. John sends his regards as well as states that the preparation of data showing Overseer Chase's recovery is less than necessary, as his concerns currently lie with the situation in the capital."

An online streaming from the Novalysian news network opened through the airwaves.  The video feed showed the space docks and as the flagship moved to launch from Novalysian ports, the crowd was large but the atmosphere seemed different as the observers watched in aw and support rather than rioting.

"This is Jessica Ryant reporting from Skyre.  St. John's decision to send a the flagship Lykaon to Rescenta seems to have support from many of the once rioting individuals here in the capital.  People who were willing to face lethal force to voice their anger toward the ADR for the injuries inflicted upon Legislative Overseer Alexander Chase are now looking on to the stars in awe as one of Novalyse' finest spacecrafts launches for Rescenta."  The camera panned across the space docks before flickering in and out and eventually dying again.

The Senate of Reza breathed a collective sigh of relief. They were half-expecting that Novalyse would spit on their request for them to remain in more neutral territory. At least they could contain the damage more efficiently at a space station than they could at Rescenta, if issues were to arise. A short confirmation was sent from Station RX-2391's Commander that the docks were prepared to receive both flagships, and it very kindly requested that all weapons and offensive systems be disabled or reserved in order to ensure peace and goodwill amongst the guests.

The citizens and officials of ADR watched cautiously, unsure of what was going on. They were just relieved that the massive flagships were redirected to a space station instead of directly on their doorsteps.

Flagship Lykaon transmitted to Rescenta and Station RX-2391 "This is Sergeant Markson transmitting that Flagship Lykaon will be arriving at Docking Station RX-2391 shortly. In compliance to St. John's official order we will disarm all military weaponry on the ship, must any other standards be met before making the final approach of the Docking Station?"

St. John reluctantly answered the phone without reading the number.

"What the hell do you want, can't you see I've got my goddamn hands full?"

St. John listened in agitation after reading the caller ID.

"You're mistaken Tyrus, this is far from what I'd call full support. I've got streets to clear, civilians to put on trial, soldiers to reprimand, less I continue. No I didn't, although you should think twice next time you spout off slanders to a leader of a rioting colony. The next one may not be so forgiving. Excuse me if I'm being short but I don't have the time to lolly with foreign officials right now."

"Lykaon is ready to make the final approach on the ADR's Docking Station, are all your systems and requires clear?"

I fully understand that. If there's anything I or the Vulcan that's at the ADR station can help with Let me know directly. I'm Also looking in to see if my Vulcan can listen to or pick up any radio chatter from the group responsible for the attack, I have a sense that the Eosa are likely being manipulated. I'll Keep you informed.
